Glimpse: Weis #98 - Columbia, PA

Image
WEIS #98 Opened:  Mid 1970s Address:   1786 Columbia Ave Photographed:  September 2021 I'm not really sure how to start this post off, so let's get started... Weis #98, a mid-1970s model store, opened (obviously) in the mid-1970s. Like many other stores, #98's exterior was remodeled in the early 1990s, adding a mirrored facade and white pillars (I'm not particularly fond of this model). Throughout the 2010s, several small exterior improvements were made, leading up to the removal of the mirrored facade in summer 2019.  Appearance of Weis #98 after the 1990s remodel (Photo from The Weis Project)

Glimpse: Weis #138 - Lancaster, PA (Stoney Battery Rd)

Image
WEIS #138 Opened:  1990s Address:   1400 Stony Battery Rd Photographed:  August 2021 Welcome back. Today is the one-year anniversary of the Willow Street Kmart closure :(. For this week and the next, we've got two Lancaster County Weis stores to take a look at, both of which are in West Hempfield Township. (This is the first one, Columbia is the second). Weis #138, the precursor for superstores like #17 on Fruitville Pike, opened in late 1995 or early 1996. At the time of its opening, Weis #138 featured no tower entrance like it does today. Instead, a large, nondescript, standalone store with a "sloping, green-topped roof covering the porch in its middle" (wording from archived copy of http://weisproject.com/store_detail.php?store=138 ). A Weis Gas-N-Go was later added. Original appearance of Weis #138 (Photo from The Weis Project) Weis Gas 'N Go

Glimpse: Weis #274 - Rehoboth Beach, DE

Image
WEIS #274 Opened:  2016 Address: 19287 Miller Rd Photographed:  July 2021 Weis #274 started its life in the late1980s as a Food Lion. It was later expanded and remodeled in 1997 . In 2016, Food Lion's owner, Delhaize Group, merged with Ahold (which already owned the Giant Food chain), causing many overlaps in terms of store locations. This resulted in 38 Food Lion stores being sold to Weis Markets , including four Delawarean stores. These stores went on to become Weis's first stores in the state. UPDATE 04/16/22: This store was announced to be closing permanently in mid-May. Photo by joshaustin610 on Flickr

Glimpse: Weis #67 - Hummelstown, PA

Image
WEIS #67 Opened:  1994 Address:   1170 Mae St Photographed:  July 2021 Happy New Year! 🥳 Weis's Hummelstown store (#67) originally opened in 1968 at the Park Village Shopping Center. In January 1994, with co-anchor Kmart , it relocated to the current location at 1170 Mae Street. After the original store's closure, it was converted to a  Scot's Lo-Cost and a franchised Save-A-Lot. However, these stores were later found to be "sham supermarkets", only open to prevent Giant from opening in the former Kmart space.  The original store at Park Village in 1981 (Photo: Vintage Aerial) The old store after being converted to a Save-A-Lot, before being demolished for Sheetz (Photo: The Weis Project)

Glimpse: Weis #63 - Mount Joy, PA

Image
WEIS #63 Opened:  1967 Address:   441 W. Main St Photographed:  July 2021 Weis of Mount Joy, store #63, opened in 1967 with a similar design to #65 in Lancaster . It appears that this store was expanded to the right twice, once in the 1970s or 1980s and again in the 1990s. It was also refurbished, bringing the store almost to what it is today, except with a blue canopy and yellow lettering for all the exterior signage. It was remodeled again in 2004, swapping the yellow lettering for red, however, the canopy remained blue until 2011 or 2012.
