Glimpse: Walgreens #12593 - Colonia, NJ

Image
WALGREENS #12593 Opened:  2009 Address:   1303 St. George Ave Photographed:  January 2022 For the blog's first venture into New Jersey, we have just one drugstore to look at, although since there are over 750 Rite Aid, CVS, and Walgreens in the state, we'll definitely be back for more in the future! Walgreens' second Colonia store, at 1303 Saint George Ave (the first is on Inman Avenue), opened in 2009.

Glimpse: Walgreens #11006 - Wilmington, DE

Image
WALGREENS #11006 Opened:  2006 Address:   2119 Concord Pike Photographed:  December 2021 Continuing our Happy-Harry's-Turned Walgreens series, which we haven't had an installment of in a while, we have one of the oldest of the chain's stores, located in the Fairfax area of Wilmington. This store has a long history, dating back to 1973 when Happy Harry's acquired a Cash Saver Drug store at 2303 Concord Pike, converting it to store #6 for the small chain. Happy Harry's later relocated to 2119 Concord, in a space formerly occupied by 'Fabric Den'. In 2006, with all the other Happy Harry's stores, this store was sold to Walgreens and was rebranded in 2011. Happy Harry's #6, August 2007 (Google Maps Streetview)

Glimpse: Walgreens #9591 - York, PA

Image
WALGREENS #9591 Opened:  2005 Address:   2350 E. Market St Photographed:  December 2021 After our brief detour into Hamburg last week, we're back down in York County to finish out with Walgreens #9591 before going on to Harrisburg.  One of three stores in York county for Walgreens, store #9591 opened in November 2005. It's located along the busy retail corridor of Market Street, so I imagine it does really well.

Glimpse: Former Rite Aid #476 - Phoenix, MD | The Rite-Up

Image
RITE AID #476 Opened:  1978? Address:   3463 Sweet Air Rd Photographed:  October 2021 After our brief intermission from drugstores last week to take a peek at two Tom's stores, but this week, we're back in Maryland for one more drugstore -- Former Rite Aid #476 (Now a Walgreens). Rite Aid #476 was one of over 1,100 Rite Aid stores to be converted to Walgreens in summer 2019. I can't seem to find out when Rite Aid first opened (1978, perhaps, with the neighboring Safeway?), although I can confirm that Walgreens #19043 opened here in August, 2019.  Rite Aid #476 during the remodel to Walgreens (Google Maps Streetview) (Google Maps Streetview)

Image
WALGREENS #15130 Opened:  2014 Address:   10410 York Rd Photographed:  October 2021 Continuing through Maryland, before heading back up to Pennsylvania, we've got two more stores to take a look at -- this one, and the Rite Aid-turned-Walgreens in Phoenix. Construction started on Walgreens #15130 in 2013, on a space formerly occupied by an Exxon gas station and convenience store. It appears to have opened at some point in 2014, although I can't be completely sure.  Exxon, which closed in 2012 (Google Maps Streetview) Walgreens #15130 in its early stages (Google Maps Streetview)

Glimpse: Walgreens #15953 - Washington, DC

Image
WALGREENS #15953 Opened:  Mid 2010s Address:   1155 F St NW Photographed:  October 2021 For our next stop in Washington, DC, we have another Walgreens, this one located at the intersection of 12th and F streets. After this, we've got one more drugstore in the District of Columbia before moving on to Maryland, and eventually, Pennsylvania. Walgreens #15953, another store with multiple levels (although I'm unsure of exactly how many) opened at some point between June 2014 and July 2015, in a space formerly housing a Guess store.

A Flagship Walgreens - Walgreens #15360 - Washington, DC

Image
WALGREENS #15360 Opened:  2013 Address:   801 7th St NW Photographed:  October 2021 For our first stop in Washington, DC we have a Walgreens located in the city's Chinatown district. Make sure to stay tuned, as we'll have many more stores from the area throughout the coming weeks! Now, this is something that doesn't happen every day. This Walgreens used to be a CVS . CVS closed on October 23, 2007 in favor of the store at 400 Massachusetts Ave. On February 21, 2013, Walgreens opened its seventh flagship store in the former CVS.  Some unique features of Walgreens #15360 would be the Mandarin and Chinese characters on the facade, translating to the word "pharmacy". Another would be the fact that this store is three levels, totaling over 21,000 square feet.  CVS, August 2007 (Google Maps Streetview) Former CVS, July 2009 (Google Maps Streetview)

Glimpse: Walgreens #11021 - Rehoboth Beach, DE

Image
WALGREENS #11021 Opened:  2006 Address:   18993 Munchy Branch Rd Photographed:  July 2021 Welcome back to the last post of the year for our Happy Harry's-turned-Walgreens series (which is good, I'm out of intro ideas at this point...)! After this, we've got just one more drugstore to take a look at  - The Rite Aid in Rehoboth Beach. After that, we're headed back up to Pennsylvania where I've got quite a few more stores in my backlog. Happy Harry's #21 (Walgreens #11021) opened in 1988 in the Rehoboth Marketplace shopping center, 19287 Miller Rd. Like many other stores from the era, it relocated in 2001, to 18993 Munchy Branch Rd. Walgreens bought it in 2006 with the rest of the chain, it was rebranded in 2011. The original store in the Rehoboth Marketplace shopping center

Quick Look: Walgreens #11033 - Bethany Beach, DE

Image
WALGREENS #11033 Opened:  2006 Address:   32979 Coastal Hwy Photographed:  July 2021 Our Happy Harry's-turned-Walgreens series has finally made it down to Sussex County! After this, before heading back up to Pennsylvania, we've got a Rite Aid, then another Walgreens, then another Rite Aid, so stay tuned for all of that! Walgreens #11033, like most of the company's other Delawarean stores, started out as a Happy Harry's. Store #33 for the small chain, this store first opened in July 1966 at 792 Garfield Pkwy. On April 17, 2001, it was closed in order to relocate to its current location, 32979 Coastal Hwy, reopening on April 18, 2001. Like all the other Happy Harry's stores, #33 was converted to a Walgreens in 2006, being remodeled in 2011. This store has a strange exterior, not matching any other ground-up Happy Harry's from the era (It's not in a shopping center or anything, so I don't know what the deal is).

Glimpse: Walgreens #11055 - Middletown, DE (Summit Bridge Rd)

WALGREENS #11055 Opened:  2006 Address:   4465 Summit Bridge Rd Photographed:  July 2021 Continuing our Happy Harry's-Walgreens series, we find ourselves back in Middletown, looking at another one of five Walgreens stores in the city. This one opened on August 8, 2001, and was referred to by Happy Harry's as the "Shops of Mt. Pleasant" store. With all the chain's other stores, it was sold to Walgreens in 2006 and was rebranded to the Walgreens name in 2011, with all the other Delawarean stores.   My photo of Walgreens #11055, which is conveniently also a photo of the rest of the shopping center. Walgreens recently repainted the exterior. Google Maps Streetview

Glimpse: Walgreens #11067 - Middletown, DE (Main Street) **BONUS: LIST OF ALL HAPPY HARRY'S STORES**

Main St Photographed:  July 2021 To start off our series of Delawarean Walgreens stores (all of which were formerly Happy Harry's), we have a store located at 396 East Main Street in Middletown. It originally opened on May 14, 2003, as Happy Harry's #67. With Walgreens purchasing all of the Happy Harry's stores in 2006, this store was converted to Walgreens #11067 that same year, then in 2011, the signage was updated, officially killing off the Happy Harry's name and giving Walgreen Co. its first branded Delawarean stores. Glimpse: Walgreens #9876 - Lancaster, PA

Image
Walgreens #9876, located at 1262 Lititz Pike in Lancaster, Pennsylvania was built in 2006 and opened in early January 2007 on a piece of land formerly occupied by a Chi-Chi's restaurant, which likely closed in 2004 with the rest of the chain. This space has been occupied by Walgreens since it opened in 2007 and is part of the Golden Triangle shopping center. The Chi-Chi's restaurant. Sorry about the terrible quality photo, it's all I could get my hands on. (Lancaster New Era) An aerial view of the Chi-Chi's. Glimpse: Happy Harry's #19 - Newark, DE

Image
Happy Harry's #19, located at 241 College Square in Newark, Delaware was built and opened in 1982 with the rest of the College Square shopping center, which, at the time included a Pathmark (now ACME ) and a Bradlees (became  Kmart , which closed in 2018). Became Walgreens #11019 in 2006, although the exterior signage was never replaced and the store was bannered as Happy Harry's until its closure around 2010. The store as a Happy Harry's. Google Maps Streetview The building as it appears today. There's still some labelscar on the building, although due to the rain it's hard to see. Close-up of Happy Harry's logo on the building. I have no idea why Google put a filter on part of the logo. Google Maps Streetview
