Glimpse: Aldi #2667 - Lancaster, PA

Image
Aldi's first Lancaster store (known as Store #1 in the Lancaster area and #2667 across the chain) originally opened at 1300 Lititz Pike in 2008 in a space formerly occupied by Hills & Ames. The space was actually originally planned to be a Price Rite supermarket. In May 2019, Aldi relocated to 1890 Fruitville Pike in part of a space formerly occupied by Kmart (the rest of the building became At Home). Although this store is new (having only opened in 2019), it has kept the store number from its original location, the first in Lancaster County. The current location, at 1890 Fruitville Pike The old location after closure. Aldi's logo was not removed. Glimpse: CVS #2053 - Landisville, PA

CVS #2053, located at 301 Main St in Landisville, Pennsylvania opened on November 1, 1995, as part of the Hempfield Shopping Center. This is the only major business in the area unless you count the TurkeyHill gas station across the street. Quick Information: Opened: 1995 Address:  301 Main St Photographed: May 2021

Glimpse: Shoppers #2371 - Wheaton, MD

Welcome back to Retail Forever! This is the last post from the Silver Spring, MD area (for now).  I've been debating whether this should be categorized as Shoppers or Lidl, but I'll just consider it Shoppers (it's more interesting, at least to me). This store was built in 1997 and opened as a Hechinger. That store closed in 1999 with the rest of the chain. In 2002, Shoppers Food & Pharmacy #2371 opened in the space. Shoppers' store remained open until 2020 when it closed to be converted to a Lidl. Lidl is planned to open around Summer 2021. The store is located at 2201 Randolph Road. Lidl. The exterior is finished being repainted, but the inside is still being stocked. A handy store layout for Shoppers that I found on Google Maps The store as a Shoppers. (Google Streetview) Former Shoppers Pharmacy sign. At the date of this imagery, the store was already "winding down" and the pharmacy was closed. You can faintly see the space where the word "pharmacy

Abandoned: Mobil #9632233 - Lancaster, PA

Image
Alrighty. Here we are at another gas station that I have literally no information about except for the fact that it existed. Luckily (not that it's closed, luckily as in it makes a more interesting blog post), this one's abandoned so it's at least a little more interesting... I think it's safe to say that this Mobil opened in or around 1982 (that's when the neighboring Pizza Hut opened). I'll also assume that this is store #9632233 (I found a Mobil receipt from 1999, it says "East Pete[ersburg] Mobil. I'm almost certain that there was never a Mobil in East Petersburg, and this is close enough to the area...) Anyway, it appears to have closed around 2006 (that's when all newspaper references of it disappear) and it's been abandoned since then.  As you can see, it's in terrible condition. Quick Information: Opened: Around 1982(?) Closed: Around 2006 Address:  1450 Manheim Pike Photographed: January 2021

Glimpse: Giant #152 - Colesville, MD

Welcome back to Retail Forever, where today we have the third and final post about a Giant-Landover supermarket in the Silver Spring, Maryland area. This specific location is located at 13490 New Hampshire Avenue, and it opened in 1978. Located just 8 minutes away from the Giant in White Oak, which we had a post about a few weeks ago, this supermarket not only has competition from chains such as Aldi and Safeway but from other Giant locations. This store features its own fueling station across the street from the main store.  The store's gas station Google Maps imagery Quick Information: Opened: 1978 Address: 13490 New Hampshire Avenue Photographed: January 2021

Glimpse: Toys "R" Us #8326 - Lancaster, PA

Image
Toys "R" Us #8326, located at 1430 Harrisburg Pike in  Lancaster, Pennsylvania opened in 1989 as one of Toys "R" Us's "brown roof" stores, with the entrance aligned to the far right of the building. In the mid-1990s, it was remodeled to the "Concept 2000" prototype, which remained in place until the store's last day, in August of 2018. When I photographed this store on April 17, 2021, there were not really any signs of demolition to come. Yes, I knew it was going to happen at some point as PennState Health had bought the land to build a new outpatient center, but not this soon... Anyway, here's an image I saw on May 3... Not exactly sure where this image is from, but it sure is the Lancaster location... Anyway, now I'll show you my photos of the store from April 17. The road sign. Still up at the time of my April 17 visit, but as of May 9, the part reading "Toys "R" Us" is gone. The storefront. This is a typica

Giant opened its 45,000 sq. foot New Hampshire Avenue supermarket between 1957 and 1963 under the chain's Super Giant banner. When the Super Giant banner was discontinued, the exterior logo was updated. The logo was updated again in the early 2010s to the current Giant-Landover logo.
